So, your employer has already done the big sustainability change for you by employing you as a remote worker – great! But you’re reading this, so you want to do more?! Amazing.

Many of us who try to live more sustainable lives know that it’s a holistic change, and that it’s better to consistently try to be better than fail to be perfect. Making little changes when and where you can is a mentally, environmentally, and often fiscally sustainable way to make the world a smidge of a better place. This list is just a set of ideas that you may or may not want to implement at your own pace!

    1. Have a healthy work-life balance

Get your work done promptly within your hours, then log off and switch off. This reduces the energy consumption of trying to finish off tasks out of hours if you’d had a bit of a distracted day at work. Plus, it reduces mental fatigue of accidental overwork, and getting projects done on time or early is usually appreciated by co-workers!

    1. Spend time outside during your breaks

Whether before and after your shift, or during your break, spending time outside such as going for a walk, run, or meditation, is an excellent way to build your appreciation for the natural world and clear your mind.

    1. Reduce media streaming whilst working

Streaming music, podcasts, or just filler noise in the background whilst working might make a repetitive task more palatable, but streaming media does use extra power.

    1. Reduce packaging where possible

Swapping canned and bottled drinks for tea or water as an example!

    1. Prepare meals in advance

This not only saves energy if you bulk cook meals in advance, but also saves precious down time. It also saves packaging if you’re preparing food from base ingredients (extra points if you go to alternative shops which use less plastic packaging, or buy seasonal locally grown ingredients).

    1. Turn lights and non-essential appliances off in the rest of your house

Try and keep your power usage only to the devices you’re using in the moment.

    1. Install energy efficient devices

This can be as small as using more efficient lightbulbs, or as large as solar panels and air-source heating. These changes may not be possible depending on living situation however.

    1. Use battery saver and eco modes

Pretty much all devices today have modes to save on power or water, else there’s always the option of “use less” - such as turn down screen brightness by a couple of notches.

    1. Optimise natural lighting and heating

Set your desk up in an area that gets lots of sunlight – this means you’ll not only be able to completely avoid using lights for a greater portion of time, but also the natural heat, mental benefits, and vitamin D of sunshine!

    1. Promote digital sustainability in your company

Start conversations about your own ideas regarding helping the environment – but don’t be pushy. Not everyone has the same priorities, which should be respected!

    1. Follow our Digital Declutter Guide

This will help bring down any emissions arising from digital use, and functions as a monthly checklist within our company!
