As the clocks go back this weekend...

Ways to Boost Your Mental Health This Winter

As the days get shorter and the weather turns colder, it’s easy to feel your energy and motivation dip. But small changes can make a big difference to your mental wellbeing over the winter months.

Here are some simple ways to give yourself a bit of an energy top-up:

1. Get as much daylight as you can

Even a short walk in the morning or on your lunch break helps regulate your mood and body clock.

2. Keep moving

Exercise releases “feel-good” hormones. It doesn’t have to be intense — a walk, stretching, or dancing in your kitchen all count!

3. Stick to a routine

Dark mornings can make it tempting to hit snooze, but a steady sleep schedule helps your energy and focus.

4. Eat for balance

Comfort food is, well, comforting - but try to include plenty of fruit, veg, and whole grains to keep your mood stable and your energy up.

5. Stay connected

It’s easy to socially hibernate in winter, but talking to friends, family, or colleagues can really lift your spirits. Going to a new event, or community activity like volunteering for a local charity, can be really inspiring.

6. Create cosy moments

Light a candle, wrap up in a blanket, read a good book — small comforts matter.

7. Reach out if you're struggling

If low mood or anxiety feels persistent, don’t face it alone. Talk to your GP or reach out to mental health support services.
